Orlando, April 29, 2022 – With education being a key tool in the Central Florida Urban League’s mission to end generational poverty, we applaud the unanimous confirmation of Senator Manny Diaz as Florida’s new education commissioner.

“I believe that education is the number one civil rights issue facing our community today,” said Glenton Gilzean Jr., President and CEO of the Central Florida Urban League. “It is through a multi-generational approach to learning that we will one day be able to end generational poverty.”

The CFUL offers multiple educational programs aimed at upskilling and enriching the entire family. For K-8 youth, the organization operates a series of micro-schools called Whitney M. Young Academy (WMYA), as well as an after-school enrichment program for students not enrolled at WMYA. Furthermore, the CFUL offers multiple adult upskilling programs, allowing adults to earn certificates in various fields, such as technology, entrepreneurship and health.

“I believe that Governor DeSantis and Commissioner Corcoran have been incredibly successful in shaping the educational future of Florida,” added Gilzean. “Senator Diaz is the perfect choice to build upon the foundation they built and we look forward to working with him.”
